BIKE:1978 Darmah SD
OWNER:James Dillard
LOCATION:Colorado
MILEAGE:33,534
ENGINE:All Original - Engine has not been removed from chassis or had any rebuilding except for normal valve adjusting and and oil changes. This bike has been very trouble free. The original mufflers had been replaced with Ducati Contis when I purchased the bike . This is an early Darmah so it still has both the kick starter as well as the electric starter, which both are functional.
CHASSIS:The paint and all items are original. There is a small amount of touch up but this bike has always been garaged in dry Colorado so there is no rust or corrosion. All electrical items are functional. Only two years of Darmahs came with sand cast Magnesium Campagnolo wheels, which this bike has.
OTHER:his specific bike has a lot of miles (33,534) but has been well maintained so it does not show it's age. This bike was built in November of 1977 so it is one of the early Darmah imports to the USA.
SIGNIFICANCE:The Darmah was the first Ducati that was truly an affordable Superbike. It has Desmo heads and good performance but also has electric start. It came with good suspension and a comfortable seating position so it was well accepted in the USA. Riding this bike today is very enjoyable and does not feel like a vintage machine.
