| SIGNIFICANCE: | This 1999 900ss was the second Ducati I purchased, and it definitely ignited "the passion". Now I have close to 30. This one may very well have the most sentimental value both for the trips taken on it (me and all the NYC Ducati boys riding SF-Tahoe-Reno-Yosemite-Laguna GP... and 8000 miles of "others"). As soon as I bought the bike I stripped it down to the frame and powder coated the frame and PVM forged wheels WHITE, in celebration of the great 1992 Superlight. In fact the full fairings have custom graphics that SAY Superleggera; but I wanted everyone to be able to see the motor and it's ancillary bits since attention was put into all of them. This bike was built by Joe Tortora of Supermoto in Long Island in May of 1999. I must have put a half dozen more carbon fiber pieces on the bike, and then decided I wanted to see more metal - and replaced them with polished billet pieces. The screen vented Casoli front hugger made the "cut" however! The handmade swingarm is a Ducati Performance alloy piece which was made in very limited quantities. I had it machine polished to match the equally blingy Rizoma clutch cover and belt guards. Ohlins suspenders front and rear... naturally. I had a friend at the time who was just getting started in powder coating - so I figured I would be a nice guy and send him as many parts as I could. I think I gave out a rainbow of custom colored pressure plates as Christmas gifts that year ;-) So the pressure plate on the clutch was a natural and I figured so were the cylinder heads since they were off the bike at that moment. Boy did Joe get mad at me for doing that ! I knew they were CALLED "cooling fins" but I guess I overlooked the fact that they actually PERFORMED a cooling function. So, the motor went off to Bruce Meyers (then) at BCM and he machined additional oil raceways and added a "pre-EFI" SS oil cooler to supplement the "new style" oil cooler which was left in place. Suffice it to say, it never got hot. I think Joe felt a touch or guilt for berating me AFTER they were yellow...but he more than made up for that by calling and emailing Silmoto in Germany for 10 months, until they finally sold us one of 10 "experimental" sets of ultra-high-mount exhaust systems. Ti into carbon as you can see. I remember that I wasn't quite ready for a 916's power at the time...but I did want more horses. So we also upgraded to a 940cc kit with high compression forged Bucci pistons. Many of my bikes are special to me as a collector, because of the "thrill of the hunt" in finding a certain model in just the right condition..this bike , and my 1999 750 monster elicit a very special feeling to me as a RIDER, given those 8000 miles of fun which "sealed my fate" as a lifelong Ducatisiti. |
