BIKE:1979 Mike Hailwood Replica
OWNER:Peter Calles
LOCATION:Maryland
MILEAGE:12,725
ENGINE:Stock 863.9cc Desmodromic engine with open bell mouth 40mm Dell Orto carburetors. Five speed gearbox, Conti mufflers and kick start only. The engine is original and complete with the factory lead seal underneath the crankcase.
CHASSIS:The early Hailwood frames are slightly different from the stock 900ss. It hasn't the side cover retaining lugs. Front polished forks and rear shocks are Marzocchi. Brake calipers are Brembo "Goldline" and the Speedline rims are magnesium, all stock equipment.
OTHER:Only the first series came with a full one piece racing-style faring, solo seat and a fiberglass tank cover to pass British regulations. Only for the 1979 model the tank and tail section stripes are not decals but hand painted at the factory. The Mike Hailwood replica mirrored the famous NCR racers. This was Ducati first production "numbered certificate" motorcycle, also its first "tricolore."
SIGNIFICANCE:Ducati originally conceived in 1979 a limited batch of 200 Hailwood replicas as a UK only machine, celebrating Mike Hailwoods legendary Isle of Man victory. Only the first 200 came with a factory "certificate of authenticity." I imported it from England and I'm now the third owner. This Hailwood replica is number 30 from the original batch of 200. It's in original condition and complete with the factory certificate.
